Get the Most Out of Your WWHA Membership
by: Renee Stasiewicz
One of the most frequently asked questions we get from WWHA members, is "How do I get the most out of my WWHA membership?" The key to maximizing the benefits of your membership… begins with you. By getting involved in the association activities you'll better position yourself to grow your TWH network and learn from others who are extremely knowledgeable about our great breed!
Sometimes it is hard to know just where to start. So, here are a few ideas….
- Attend the General Membership Meetings - Membership meetings are mostly social events. The atmosphere is always friendly and the conversation lively. It's a great chance to pick up a tip or hint, or ask around if you're looking to breed or buy a new horse. And, don't worry; if you don't know anyone, one of our board members would be happy to introduce you to others.
- Sign-up for a Clinic - Want to learn something new or enhance your TWH knowledge? Then our clinics are the way to go. We always have interesting topics and allow plenty of time for audience questions. Many of our clinics are designed so that you can bring your horse and participate!
- Come to a Show - You can choose to compete in the show ring, or participate from ringside. Either way, a show can be a fun experience. The excitement of the show and the pride of winning can be very rewarding. There are classes for all levels and disciplines - Youth, Novice, Amateur, English, Western, Trail, Equitation, Speed Events, and even a Country Pleasure class that is open to other gaited breeds or non-registered walking horses. And, there are plenty of fun ways to help out at the show.
- Volunteer - We encourage every member to volunteer at least once or twice a year. One of the easiest ways to get involved is through our volunteer program. You'll meet many people and really learn a lot. You could be the first person to congratulate our show winners and give away the placement ribbons. Or, spend the day at center ring helping the judge and in the process learn what judges look for in ranking the best horses. Maybe you'd like to put your vocals to work by announcing the show or helping at the registration desk. Or, are your talents in cooking, web design or photography. Let us know what you are interested in!
- Share your Knowledge - One of the best things about being a member is that you can learn from everyone. That includes other members learning from YOU. Write an article for the website or newsletter, or host a clinic. The information you share could be from experience or from research.
WWHA makes it easy to find out what is happening or how you can volunteer. Watch for your monthly newsletter (e-mailed or mailed) -- it comes out the first week of the month. Or, visit our website 24-hours-a-day/7-days-a-week for breaking news, event details and more! Plus, make sure we know your e-mail address so we can e-send you announcements too!
We hope these ideas get your creative juices going in how to really take advantage of your membership. Contact the board members to get involved!
