WISCONSIN WALKING HORSE ASSOCIATION (WWHA)
POLICY REGARDING STRANGLES
At a special meeting, duly noticed and constituted, and with a quorum present, the Board
of Directors of WWHA met on April 23, 1996 to consider establishing a policy and procedure
for the WWHA regarding the infectious disease condition of horses known as strangles.
After discussion and consideration given, it was thereafter moved, seconded and unanimously
decided that commencing on and after April 23, 1996, the following conditions shall
apply:
- That in the event any horse which has contracted strangles, or has been exposed to
another horse or horses that have, and which condition has been confirmed by a
veterinarian, neither this horse nor any other horse on the premises of this horse will
be allowed to participate or show in any WWHA function until it and all of the horses
on that premises have been clinically cleared of any and all evidence thereof for a
period of six (6) weeks.
- Clinically cleared meaning that each horse on the premises be given a nasal swab
test and that the Board of Directors of WWHA be provided with certification of
negative results and no finding of strangles.
- In the alternative to the above, the owner of any such exposed horse shall have
the option of withdrawing his or her animal from any WWHA function for the balance of
the calendar year.
- This policy is subject to review and further consideration in the future by the
Board of Directors as additional evidence of scientific or veterinary advances shall
become available.
